Spring has officially arrived and with it comes our April meeting! This month’s meeting is one we have been looking forward to all year long! Sampler Guild is excited to host Needle Work Press’s, Vickie Jennett, at both our Seminar on Saturday and again on Sunday, at our regular meeting. This presentation has been years in the planning so to see it coming to fruition is very exciting! Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Kathy Sanders for making this happen!
Additionally, I am pleased to announce that I am traveling to Lawrence, Kansas to meet with the Curator of European and American Art at the Spencer Museum of Art, at the University of Kansas, to review a unique potential opportunity for our Guild! This year our Guild donated $500 to the Spencer Museum to enable them to purchase archival conservation boxes to be used to store some of their considerable sampler collection. This award is provided to institutions that curate historic needlework in alignment with the purpose of the Sampler Guild of the Rockies. During our communication, the Museum discussed their desire to create a mounting system for all their samplers in which they could be easily accessed for study and viewing without the need to handle the actual textiles. They have a similar mounting system in place for their collection of Coptic textiles. I am traveling out to view this system and better understand the cost and timeline for such a project. This could be an opportunity for our Guild to partner with the Museum long-term to see such a project put in place! Some of you may recall that last year, Alma Allen of Blackbird Designs, recounted to our group that they have used the University’s sampler collection for inspiration for many years. I look forward to sharing details of my trip with our Guild in our May newsletter.
Finally, our May meeting brings us to our Birthday celebration and our last regular meeting for the year! Where did the time go! This year we will celebrate the 26th birthday of our Guild. Please consider participating in the pincushion exchange; its always a lot of fun to see all the lovely stitched designs! Our celebration will be held at the Church and promptly begin at 1:30. Candy Scott has volunteered to coordinate a potluck so please sign up to bring a dish to share. The luncheon is potluck.
Until next time, Happy Stitching!
